What is About Music?

About Music provides one-to-one teaching sessions for children and adults in guitar, piano and/or singing. The sessions centre around the practical experience of making music on your chosen instrument, playing or singing well-known songs and developing your innate musicality, with the option of learning how to read and write music, and also of gaining an understanding of how music 'works' – thus opening up a world of improvisation and song-writing.

Guitar
Initially you will learn some well-known songs with simple accompaniments, gradually building up a bank of chords and developing new strumming and finger picking techniques. Listening to songs and learning to identify the chord changes, plus developing an understanding of the relationship between the different chords brings clarity to the learning process and makes possible the spontaneous participation of 'jamming' and your own individual interpretation of 'standards'.

The guitar sessions are particularly suitable for singers wanting to accompany themselves or other people, and for those more advanced players looking for coaching in writing and performing your own songs.

For children wanting to learn the guitar, it is important to have the right size of instrument. At About Music there are three different sizes available for you to try.

Piano
For children learning piano at an early age the emphasis is on developing finger co-ordination, a sense of rhythm, playing simple tunes from memory, and fun! Reading music is introduced when these skills are in place and at a pace relevant for each individual child.

For adult beginners at the piano, reading music is introduced at the early stages, but this is backed up by guided explorations and experiments at the keyboard, which involve techniques to develop rhythm, dexterity and co-ordination., and encourage students to play by ear.

Singing
About Music provides an opportunity to delve into your musical soul through vocalisation! The aim of the sessions is to help alleviate the physical and psychological blocks which prohibit the voice from flowing with ease, encourage emulation of different singers and styles, and thereby help in the development of your own unique singing voice and full vocal potential.

About Music does not cater for students wishing to take the Music Grade Examinations.
